Clevedon Pier was officially opened on Easter Monday 29th March 1869 and is the only Grade 1 listed pier in England. Disaster struck the pier in October 1970 when under load testing the southern side seventh trestle failed causing the seventh and eight spans to fall into the sea leaving the pierhead as an island. It wasn’t until 1985 when work started to rebuilt the pier and the main promenade structure completed in 1988 with a grand re-opening in 1989.
